Category: powell peralta deck

In 1988, Powell-Peralta ran an "Artist Wanted" advertisement in TWS and Thrasher, with the "winner" set to receive a job in the company's art department in Santa Barbara. The artist selected for this position was Sean Cliver, primarily due to the close resemblance between his illustration style and that of VCJ, the brand's iconic artist.

Cliver's first deck design, the Barbee Ragdoll, marked a departure from the traditional VCJ look. However, when it came time to update the Caballero dragon, Sean chose to emulate the master's style. At some point later, the graphic on the Caballero deck was dubbed the "Ban This" Dragon, as it was prominently featured in a video, particularly in a slow-motion sequence.

The Caballero "Ban This" Dragon deck was originally released in 1988, with artwork by Sean Cliver. The deck measures 9.265 inches in width and 32 inches in length, with a wheelbase of 14.75 inches. The deck's nose and tail both measure 6.5 inches. The truck hole pattern is the New School Short 4 Truck Hole Pattern, and the deck features a Shape 192 with a Concave K15.

It's important to note that this deck is sold as a deck-only item, and the griptape is not included. This allows skaters to customize their setup with their preferred griptape.

Powell-Peralta's decision to run the "Artist Wanted" contest and select Sean Cliver for the art department position was a strategic move that paid off. Cliver's design work, including the iconic "Ban This" Dragon, has become a beloved part of the brand's legacy and a cherished piece of skateboarding history.
