The Vato Rat Bones artwork was created by artist Craig Stecyk, who was part of the Dogtown "Z-Boy" surf-skate scene in Santa Monica during the 1970s. Stecyk's work was heavily influenced by the Hispanic gang culture and graffiti he was surrounded by, and the Vato Rat was one of the many symbols he used to decorate surfboards and mark territory at local surf spots.

In 1983, Stacy Peralta decided to bring the Vato Rat back as a Powell-Peralta graphic, calling it "Rat Bones." It was used in advertising, on decks, stickers, and T-shirts.

The Powell-Peralta re-issue deck is a close reproduction of its 1980s counterpart, featuring the original top and bottom graphics, shape, and concave. It is made with U.S. hard rock maple and glue that meets the company's specifications, and is warranted against delamination for its useful life. The shape and graphics were created in Santa Barbara, California.

The deck has a long 4 - 2.5" old school truck hole pattern, a feature that was popular in the 1980s skateboarding scene.
